This medical excursion, supervised by Kay Schaefer, MD, PhD, MSc, DTM&H, and African experts in the field of tropical medicine and travelers' health, and designed for ~13 participants of all levels, with no/limited experience in tropical medicine/traveler's health, will offer lectures (Epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Africa; Update on leprosy; Differential diagnosis of fever in the tropics; Update on African trypanosomiasis; Occupational medicine in Kakira Sugar Cane Factory; Dermatology in the tropics; Dengue fever and new emerging arbovirus infections; Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of malaria, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis; Update on Ebola in Africa; Ultrasound diagnosis in tropical medicine), individual bedside-teaching (AIDS patients at the Joint Clinical Research Center; leprosy and other skin conditions at St. Francis Hospital, Buluba; patients with fever at Buikwe Subdivision Hospital; diarrheal infections at the University Hospital, Mbarara; schistosomiasis in the outpatient department of Ruteete Health Center III; parasitic infections in Kabarole Hospital, Fort Portal), laboratory manuals (diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and related opportunistic infections, African trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis; Hands-on microscopy of parasites in the blood, stool, urine at Mengo Hospital) and field excursions (Medical botany in Mabira Rain Forest; Control strategies - trapping of Tse-Tse flies in a rural area in Buikwe; Prevention and control strategies of schistosomiasis in a school in the Bunyaruguru Crater Lakes; Guided visit to the Tooro Botanical Gardens; Bednet studies in Kyenjojo District).
Participants travel on tarmac- and maram roads (~ 1400 km) in a comfortable bus.
