Dramatic effects of a new antimicrobial stewardship program in a rural community hospital

The clinicians aimed at measuring the effects of a new antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) in a rural community hospital with no prior ASP, in the context of having a new infectious disease specialist on staff. ASP in this hospital resulted in significant decrease in Clostridium difficile infection rates in 1 year. They observed that the annualized drug cost savings was $280,000. A decline in total antibiotic utilization by 10% and total targeted antimicrobial costs by 50% was observed.
