Obesity may enhance the adverse effects of NO2 exposure in urban schools on asthma symptoms in children

In the School Inner-City Asthma Study, including students aged 4 to 13 years with asthma from 37 inner-city schools, researchers examined the links between classroom NO2 exposure and asthma symptoms as well as morbidity according to body mass index (BMI) category. At baseline, BMI percentile was ascertained in students. The analyses included 271 mainly black (35%) or Hispanic students (35%). Among these participants, a raised susceptibility to classroom NO2 exposure impacts on asthma symptoms was seemed to be caused by obese BMI status. For obese children, an improved asthma health may be attained via environmental interventions targeting indoor school NO2 levels. Despite knowing that adjustment for multiple comparisons would lead to loss of statistical significance of these findings, still large effect sizes warrant inquiry of the interaction of obesity and pollution in pediatric asthma.
