Effect of high-frequency (10-khz) spinal cord stimulation in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy

Researchers aimed at examining the effectiveness of 10-kHz spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in improving outcomes for patients with refractory painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN). In this prospective, multicenter, open-label SENZA-PDN randomized clinical trial of 216 patients, conventional medical management (CMM) was compared with 10-kHz SCS plus CMM. Outcomes revealed 10-kHz spinal cord stimulation as significantly beneficial, with 79% of treatment responders whose underlying neurological deficits did not worsen compared with 5% of controls treated with CMM. Based on these findings, they emphasize considering 10-kHz spinal cord stimulation in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy with inadequate pain relief despite best available medical treatments.
