Hyponatremia in lung cancer: Incidence and prognostic value in a Danish population-based cohort study
Lung Cancer — Sandfeld-Paulsen B, Aggerholm-Pedersen N, Winther-Larsen A., et al. | January 12, 2021
In a large Danish registry-based cohort of lung cancer patients, researchers assessed the incidence and prognostic impact of pretreatment hyponatremia. Researchers recruited 6,995 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and 1,171 with small cell lung cancer. The prognostic value of hyponatremia on overall survival in patients with NSCLC and patients with SCLC was evaluated by using Cox proportional hazard models. There was a high incidence of pretreatment hyponatremia in patients with SCLC (26%) as well as with NSCLC (16%). The data showed that, in lung cancer patients, hyponatremia appears to be an independent predictor of inferior survival, particularly in patients with NSCLC.
