Profound dysregulation of T cell homeostasis and function in patients with severe COVID‐19

Researchers herein studied homeostatic as well as functional properties of T cells in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). This multicenter cohort included prospectively enrolled people suffering from mild and severe COVID‐19. Strong perturbations of peripheral T cell homeostasis and function were evident in severe COVID‐19 vs mild disease. Presence of T cell lymphopenia was seen in severe COVID‐19 cases and besides, there was redistribution of T cell populations, including loss of naïveT cells, skewing toward CD4 + T follicular helper cells and cytotoxic CD4 + T cells,and expansion of activated and exhausted T cells in these cases. As per findings, characteristics of severe COVID‐19 included extensive T cell dysfunction and T cell apoptosis, which was shown to be related to signs of homeostatic T cell proliferation as well as T cell recovery.
