Amy C. Degnim, MD, professor of surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, discusses the different management strategies for lesions that put patients at increased risk for breast cancer.

“There’s no right or wrong choice in managing risk, it’s really just a discussion between the provider and patient to understand what their risk is, and understand the options for managing that risk and figuring out what is the best fit for that patient.”

In some cases, excising the lesion is the best course of action. However, it is important to gauge the risk of cancer so as to avoid unnecessary excisions.
